SK Oh Se-geun

Oh Se-geun of Seoul SK, a professional basketball team considered Korea's representative big man, is seeking a 'resurrection' in the 2024-2025 season, leaving behind last season, which was full of regrets.

Ahead of the 2023-2024 season, Oh Se-geun, who left Anyang Jeonggwanjang and wore the SK uniform, was expected to play an active role as the best duo in professional basketball, both inside and outside, along with Kim Sun-hyung, who was his best friend during his days at Chung-Ang University.

However, Oh Se-geun's performance in the 2023-2024 season was worse than when he was the head coach. His record also dropped significantly compared to the previous season.

Se-geun Oh, who played about 27 minutes per game in the 2022-2023 regular season and recorded 13.1 points and 6.4 rebounds, only averaged 8.5 points and 4.9 rebounds last season.

Se-Geun Oh, who led the team to victory and was selected as the playoff MVP in the 2022-2023 season, struggled as his shooting percentage plummeted.

He swallowed his disappointment as both his 2-point success rate (52.7% → 48.4%) and 3-point success rate (40.0% → 23.8%) dropped.

Since main gun Jamil Warney prefers to attack by catching the ball near the free throw line and then breaking into the narrow space under the basket, SK's perimeter attack that draws defenders out of the basket becomes important.

As Oh Se-geun achieved a 40% 3-point percentage in the 2022-2023 season, SK expected the two players to coexist without a hitch.

However, O Se-geun had a hard time adapting to SK, where 커뮤니티 Worney's goal-line attack was the core of the offense. He tried to figure out the optimal route by going back and forth between the free throw line and the end line, but it did not work out as he had hoped.

For Oh Se-geun, the slump in the PO was the most painful. Excluding the 2017-2018 season when he injured his ankle during the series, Oh Se-geun never had an average score of less than 10 points in a PO game.

However, last season, when they were eliminated in the 6-team PO with Busan KCC after three consecutive losses, they performed poorly with an average score of 2.7 points.

Oh Se-geun met with reporters at SK's training camp in Chiba, Japan on the 18th and said, "Last season, I joined the team late and played the season with poor physical balance. There were problems with my physical condition and my chemistry with the players."

Se-geun Oh, who has been the team's main gun throughout his career, revealed that his confidence has dropped as the time he touches the ball has decreased in SK, which is centered around Worney.

“Since we don’t have much time to play while directly touching the ball, we have to maximize efficiency,” said Oh Se-geun.

Big men like Oh Se-geun, who reach the twilight of their careers and whose physical abilities, including jumping ability, decline, see their success rate under the basket, rebounds, and other indicators decline.

Among the players who are like Oh Se-geun's 'senior', the one who has dealt with this aging curve (decline in skills due to aging) well is coach Kim Joo-sung who leads Wonju DB.

When Coach Kim's athletic ability declined during his active years, he significantly increased the frequency of outside attacks.

Coach Kim, who averaged 0.6 3-pointers per regular season until the 2014-2015 season, increased the number of attempts to 2.5 the following season. In the 2016-2017 season, he threw a whopping 4.2.

The success rate was also good. Coach Kim, who recorded a success rate of 48.5% in the 2015-2016 season when he seriously sought to change to a shooter, succeeded in coexisting with players specialized in the paint, such as Rod Benson, with a success rate of 36.8% in the 2016-2017 season.

Looking back at Coach Kim's play at the time, he was not restricted by his identity as a big man, and he boldly shot 3-pointers, practically giving up on 1-on-1 attacks under the basket.

Oh Se-geun has never made more than two 3-pointers in a single game in a single season during his career.

Attention is being paid to whether Oh Se-geun will reduce the importance of attacks under the basket that narrow the space when the team attacks, and boldly increase the frequency of outside shots like Coach Kim.

"I'm receiving help from the coaching staff, but ultimately I have to solve all the problems myself," said Oh Se-geun. "I'm trying to keep my body in good shape and am also practicing jump shots, which I haven't tried very much so far."

He continued, "Compared to last summer when I wasn't able to fully prepare due to joining the national team and recovering from an injury, I had a productive off-season this year."
